How to Build a Seed Starting Setup You Only Have to Buy Once

If you want to start seeds without constantly rebuying supplies…

this is the setup I wish I started with 😭

When I first got into seed starting, I kept buying things over and over again—cheap trays, random soil, stuff that didn’t last.

Now? I use a simple, reusable seed starting setup that works every season.

And it works whether you’re growing veggies, herbs, or flowers.

🌿 H2: My Reusable Seed Starting Setup (Everything in One Place)

If you want to keep it simple, I put everything I use in one place:

👉🏽 Shop my full seed starting setup here

This is the exact setup I use in my garden—nothing fancy, just what actually works.

You can find the 5-Tier Steel Wire Shelving Unit in Chrome (36 in. W x 72 in. H x 16 in. D) at Home Depot or Lowes.

🌱 H2: Seed Starting Mix (What I Use Instead of Guessing)

This matters more than people think.

You want something:

  • light
  • well-draining
  • not overloaded with nutrients

I usually make my own seed starting mix so I can control exactly what goes into it.

👉🏽 Here’s my DIY seed starting mix

If you don’t want to mix your own, I also included a simple option in my setup list.

🌱 H2: Reusable Seed Trays (Skip the Flimsy Ones)

This was one of the biggest upgrades I made.

Cheap trays:

  • crack
  • warp
  • don’t last

A sturdy, reusable tray will last you multiple seasons and make your setup way easier to manage.

👉🏽 You’ll find the exact ones I use in my setup list above.

💡 H2: Grow Lights (If You’re Starting Seeds Indoors)

If your seedlings don’t get enough light…

they’ll grow tall, weak, and fall over like they gave up 😭

A simple grow light helps:

  • keep seedlings strong
  • prevent leggy growth
  • give consistent results

👉🏽 I included my setup in the list above.

🌊 H2: Gentle Fertilizer (Once Seedlings Start Growing)

Not at the beginning—this is where I went wrong before 😭

But once your seedlings are established, they need a little support.

I keep it simple with:

👉🏽 Sea kelp fertilizer

  • supports root development
  • helps reduce plant stress
  • gentle enough for young plants

👉🏽 It’s included in my seed starting setup list.

🚫 H2: What I Don’t Use Anymore (Save Your Money)

Let me save you some frustration:

❌ Heavy garden soil for seed starting
❌ Random containers with no drainage
❌ Adding too many nutrients too early
❌ Cheap trays you’ll replace next season

🌿 H2: Why This Seed Starting Setup Works

This setup is:

✔️ Reusable
✔️ Beginner-friendly
✔️ Low stress
✔️ Cost-effective long term

You’re not constantly starting over—you’re building a system.

🌱 H2: If You’re Just Getting Started

If you don’t want to overthink it:

Start with:

  • a good seed starting mix
  • a sturdy tray
  • light

That alone will get you further than most beginners.

My little garden is doing big things…
but only after I stopped rebuying the same stuff every season 😅
